New Zealand needs to get rid of 80% of its dairy cows because “dairying is dirtying our water”.
That was the message given to the recent annual meeting of Wanganui Federated Farmers by the province’s one-time president. Apparently, the ‘award winning’ columnist and ardent critic of farming Rachel Stewart was the guest speaker at this meeting. Stewart also predicted there would be “synthetic milk in five years and people wouldn’t be eating meat in 10 years”. But the Hound reckons Feds should care more about who it lets become a provincial head, let alone who it invites to speak at its annual meetings, if it wants to encourage more membership. This old mutt seriously doubts whether an ex train-driving, lesbian, farm hating falconer is the right sort of person Feds needs to help grow the organisation.
